Press conference of the Media Director of Asayish Agency.
The Asayish Agency of the Kurdistan Region announced its activities and statistics for 2024 regarding narcotics on Tuesday. The agency revealed that Sulaymaniyah Province is the cleanest city in Iraq and the region when it comes to the use and trade of narcotics.
Colonel Salam Abdul Khaliq, the media director of the Asayish Agency in the Kurdistan Region, confirmed during a press conference that, as part of their efforts throughout 2024, they arrested 1,019 individuals on narcotics-related charges, 523 of whom were users, while 14 were international drug traffickers.
He continued: "Our statistics show that 970 of the accused are male, and 49 are female, with ages ranging from 18 to 64. Through our efforts this year, we seized 3 tonnes, 24 kilograms, and 600 grams of various narcotic substances, including crystal, heroin, acid, cocaine, Captagon pills, Triac, Shadana seeds, and hashish. Additionally, a total of 121,330 narcotic pills of various types were confiscated."
Colonel Salam Abdul Khaliq further explained that their forces carried out 23 joint operations with other security agencies in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region this year, dismantling 25 local and international drug networks. These operations aimed to prevent the Kurdistan Region, and especially Sulaymaniyah, from becoming a transit point for narcotics to other regions and countries. Sulaymaniyah has now been recognised as the cleanest city in Iraq and the region in terms of narcotics.
