Iraq Peshmerga Nineveh Kurdistan ISIS terrorists

Seven years have passed since the liberation of Iraq from the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organisation, during which the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) played a pivotal role in vanquishing the terrorists.  The party has consistently led in sacrifices and triumphs in the fight against terrorism. The party made numerous sacrifices. More than a thousand PUK Peshmerga were martyred in the war against ISIS.

ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017.

Iraqi President: We reaffirm our commitment to national unity

Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid recalled the country's victory over ISIS and paid tribute to the fallen martyrs.

President Rashid said in a message on X: "On this anniversary of victory over Daesh, we proudly honour the courage and sacrifices of our heroic security forces—Army, Police, Popular Mobilization Forces, and Peshmerga—and extend our heartfelt congratulations to our resilient people. We pay tribute to the martyrs and the fatwa of the Supreme Religious Authority that guided us through this historic triumph."

"Today, we reaffirm our commitment to national unity, bolstering security and fostering cooperation to protect our nation, reduce tensions, address potential threats and promote stability across the region," he added.

The Peshmerga accelerated the recapture of Mosul

Ghayas Surchi, head of the media department of the PUK's Nineveh headquarters, told PUKMEDIA: "The Peshmerga forces, together with the Iraqi security forces, have significantly contributed to the campaign to reclaim Mosul and liberate the city from ISIS terrorists, particularly in the recapture of the Sinjar, Makhmur, and Gwer districts, the Nineveh Plain, and various other areas within Nineveh province."

"The Peshmerga forces have significantly contributed to the Iraqi security forces' efforts against terrorism in the region, even launching attacks towards central Mosul, which led to the recapture of Mosul faster and easier," Surchi said.

Surchi further stated: "Throughout the operations, the Peshmerga forces consistently offered military and logistical support to the Iraqi security forces to facilitate their advance into Mosul and created safe paths to evacuate IDPs and those who escaped the violence and threats posed by ISIS terrorists."
