Due to an incomplete quorum, the first session of the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament stays open, and electing the speaker, deputy speaker, and secretary of the parliament remains to be settled in the second round of the first session.
The first session of the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament began on Monday afternoon, December 2, 2024, with the attendance of 97 elected candidates and consuls and representatives of the 19 countries in the Kurdistan Region.
In line with the agenda, the session began with recitations from the Holy Quran, followed by a minute of silence to honour the martyrs of Kurdistan. After that, the Chief of the Kurdistan Parliament’s Diwan then invited the oldest member of parliament to take the legal oath and assume the presidency of the session in accordance with the internal regulations of the parliament.
Mohammed Suleiman Mohammed, the oldest member of the parliament, oversaw the session as the speaker of the parliament and invited the elected candidate to take the legal oath, according to the bylaws of the parliament.
The oath reads: "I swear by Almighty God to preserve the unity of the people and land of Kurdistan-Iraq and its supreme interests."
The 97 participating elected candidates officially became members of the parliament after taking the legal oath, after which the speaker opened the door to nominations for the positions of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Secretary of Parliament, where a number of members ran for the three positions, but due to the lack of quorum, the session was kept open until an agreement was reached between the blocs and the quorum was completed.
On November 26, 2024, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, issued a regional decree setting 11:00 AM on December 2, 2024, as the scheduled time for the opening session of the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament.
The election for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament took place on October 20, 2024, across four electoral constituencies, with the final results announced on October 30, 2024.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan secured major victories in all four constituencies, increasing both its vote share and its representation with 23 seats. The final results were formally approved by the Independent High Electoral Commission on November 18, 2024, after all complaints against the outcome were dismissed.
