The Kurdistan Parliament is set to hold the inaugural session of its sixth electoral term at 11:00 am today, Saturday 30th November 2024, during which the 100 newly elected members will take the legal oath of office.
The necessary arrangements for the session have been made by the Protocol Department, and the Kurdistan Parliament's Research Centre has compiled a parliamentary guide to familiarise the new members with their roles and the process of legislating laws, marking the first time such a guide has been prepared.
According to the agenda issued by the Diwan of Kurdistan Parliament on 30th November 2024, the session will commence with recitations from the Holy Quran, followed by a minute of silence to honour the martyrs of Kurdistan.
The Chief of the Kurdistan Parliament's Diwan will then invite the eldest member among the newly elected representatives from the sixth electoral term to take the legal oath and assume the role of session chair, in line with Articles 11 (second) and 12 (first) of the Parliament's internal regulations. Subsequently, the Chief will call upon the other elected members to take their oaths, as stipulated in Article 12 (second) of the internal regulations, after which the eldest member will continue to preside over the session in accordance with the rules.
On 26th November 2024, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, issued a regional decree setting the first session of the sixth Parliament term for 11:00 am on 2nd December 2024.
The election for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament took place on 20th October 2024 across four electoral constituencies, with the final results announced on 30th October 2024.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan secured major victories in all four constituencies, increasing both its vote share and its representation with 23 seats. The final results were formally approved by the Independent High Electoral Commission on 18th November 2024, after all appeals against the outcome were dismissed.
