DPM & British Home Secretary meet in Erbil.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, welcomed British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in Erbil, alongside Jalal Sheikh Naji, Director of the Protection and Information (Parastin & Zanyari) Agency, Hiwa Ahmed, Director of the Kurdistan Region Security (Asayish) Agency, the British Ambassador to Iraq, and the British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region.
During their meeting, they discussed various aspects of bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and the UK, with a focus on tackling organised crime and drug smuggling. Both sides commended the existing cooperation and strong ties, emphasising the importance of further developing their relationship in these areas.
Addressing the issue of illegal immigration, Qubad Talabani stated: "While more security measures are necessary to combat this issue, the Kurdistan Regional Government, the British government, and European nations must collaborate to improve the economic conditions of local districts and sub-districts. Economic growth and reducing youth unemployment in different areas offer a long-term solution to the problem of illegal immigration."
The two sides also discussed the post-election phase in the Kurdistan Region. On this subject, Qubad Talabani remarked: "Negotiations between political parties to form the new government have already begun. Our goal is to establish an effective government that can tackle the Region's fundamental issues, particularly economic and service-related challenges, and work to improve the standard of living for the people of Kurdistan."
