Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid says that they will achieve peace and security for Iraqis to live in harmony and has also voiced confidence that Donald Trump’s return to power in the United States (US) could deliver long-awaited stability to a world in turmoil.

Speaking at the Middle East Peace and Security Forum in Erbil with Al Arabiya News’ Hadley Gamble, President Rashid said, “everybody’s been following the United States election… we hope the new administration will make peace and stability in the world.”

“I think that’s our ultimate aim—from President Trump to carry out his message and to physically implement peace and security between all the countries and resolve the conflict which we have,” he said.

Asked about US troop presence in Iraq, President Rashid acknowledged the lack of consensus on the issue but pointed to Iraq’s recent progress.

“Fortunately, for the last few years, we have been enjoying safety and security in Iraq,” he noted, while emphasising Iraq’s desire to focus on rebuilding and fostering peace.

President Rashid also reiterated the strength of relations between the neighboring countries that share a 1,600-kilometer border and intertwined populations.

Path to prosperity

Reflecting on Iraq’s recent stability, President Rashid highlighted the country’s resilience and potential.

“Iraq has always been a rich country. Civilization, culture, education, and development started over 6,000 years ago and have been continuous,” he said.

As Iraq turns the page on decades of conflict, the president called for investment to rebuild and develop the nation.

“Yes, we need investment—both Iraqi investment and outside investment,” he said.

“For the last nearly 50 years, the Iraqi people have lived in conflicts, sometimes internal conflict, sometimes [external] conflicts. We experienced all of it, war, invasion, occupation, sanctions, and lately? We experienced terrorism, which ended up with the terrorism of da’esh [ISIS] on large parts of Iraq,” he noted.

“We have closed that chapter and the new chapter is we are going to achieve peace and security for the Iraqi people to live in harmony,” the president said.
