On Thursday, 31st October 2024, Dr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani was elected as the new Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, securing 180 votes after the session was adjourned for a second time.

Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, Salim al-Issawi, Talal al-Zubaie, and Amir Abdul-Jabbar were the candidates vying for the position of Speaker of the Iraqi parliament.

The session commenced with 195 MPs present, and the number rose to 271 MPs. In the first round of voting, al-Mashhadani received 153 votes, Issawi secured 95 votes, and Amir Abdul-Jabbar received nine votes, with 14 invalid votes.

In the second round, al-Mashhadani was elected as the Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, securing 180 votes.
