The session of the Iraqi parliament commenced this evening, Thursday 31/10/2024, to elect a new Speaker, with 195 representatives in attendance. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, Salim al-Issawi, Talal al-Zubaie, and Amir Abdul-Jabbar are vying for the position.

In this context, the Leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the parliament expressed his hope that the quorum would be reached today to elect a new Speaker.

Harem Kamal Agha, Leader of the PUK bloc, stated in an interview with al-Masra Channel: "Most members of the Sunni community are in agreement on Dr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani taking up the role of Speaker of the Iraqi parliament," adding that "the PUK bloc also supports the choice favoured by the majority of Sunni representatives for the Speaker role."

He continued, "The decision of the PUK and its President, Bafel Jalal Talabani, was to wait until a consensus was reached within the Sunni community to establish a majority around one candidate for the Speaker position, and we have followed this approach."

Harem Kamal Agha expressed his joy that the Sunni community has finally formed a majority to support Mahmoud al-Mashhadani’s nomination for the role of Speaker, hoping that the quorum will be completed and this chapter will be concluded.
