PUK Achieves Great Victory in Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections

PUK PUK 129 Kurdistan Parliament Elections IHEC Iraq Kurdistan

The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the preliminary results of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections while also declaring that the elections' turnout was 78%.

Judge Omar Ahmed, Chairman of the IHECs Board of Commissioners, confirmed during a press conference that turnout for the elections was 78%, and the results announced are based on 99.63% of the total votes cast from 7,044 polling stations.

According to the announced statistics of the IHEC, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) achieved a great victory in the four electoral constituencies (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Halabja, and Duhok) and obtained the votes needed to win seats in all electoral constituencies.

The PUK's votes in all electoral districts are as follows:

Erbil constituency: Second place with 110,353 votes
Sulaymaniyah constituency: First place with 256,813 
Halabja constituency: First place with 12,530 
Duhok constituency: Fourth place with 28,445 

Thus, the total votes achieved by the PUK reached 408,131 votes, according to the preliminary results of the IHEC.

Latif Nerwayi, Head of the PUK Media Board, said earlier during his appearance on the 12 o'clock news segment of the GK TV Channel: "The number of our seats has risen by 30-35% in this election, and preliminary results indicate that the PUK is the sole entity to have secured seats in all four provinces, demonstrating that the PUK is a national force."

After six years, the general and special voting of the elections for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament took place, where the special voting took place on October 18, 2024, and general voting took place on October 20, 2024.
