Qubad Talabani, Head of the Secretariat Bureau of President Mam Jalal, convened with the artists working on the election campaign of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Raparin, during which he stated that the PUK holds a profound belief in freedom, asserting that it not only embraces freedom but is also proud that people are free to oppose the PUK.

He asserted that art nourishes the soul of society and serves as a fundamental foundation in safeguarding the essence of any nation and continued to state that art requires freedom for its development, and in Kurdistan, throughout the past, present, and future, the sole entity that protects and ensures freedom across all domains is the PUK.

Talabani further stated that art under an authoritarian system not only stagnates but is also compelled towards inferior quality, which will be marketed to society as art. He added that the PUK asserts its obligation to safeguard and ensure freedom for artists and other societal segments in the future.

The Head of the Secretariat Bureau of President Mam Jalal emphasised that the PUK holds a profound belief in freedom, asserting that it not only embraces freedom but is also proud that people are free to oppose the PUK and opposition forces and free media emerges and flourishes under the PUK's rule.

During another part of the meeting, Talabani stated that the PUK has devised a plan to ensure freedom for artists and will stand against any entity attempting to curtail freedoms and impose authoritarian control, adding that the PUK will also endeavour to support artists, particularly in fostering authentic and high-quality art in Kurdistan.

He urged artists to endorse the PUK in this pivotal election, as only the PUK can and is committed to being the protector of freedom for artists and critics. He cautioned that a force capable of penalising a journalist and activist under terrorism law might readily fabricate an excuse to imprison and penalise an artist in the future.

The sixth term of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections is scheduled to take place on October 20, 2024. The PUK is contesting with PUK List 129 and 172 candidates under the slogans "Correcting the Course of Governance" and "We Will End It."
