The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has released a statement to mark the anniversary of President Mam Jalal's passing. The Politburo emphasised, "Under the guidance and presidency of Mam Jalal, freedoms flourished and a suitable environment was created for the civil and democratic struggle of all segments."
The following is the full text of the statement:
On this day, 3rd October 2017, Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world lost a great leader, a revolutionary, a skilled diplomat, a thoughtful writer, a fair and equitable lawyer, and a symbol of both coexistence and the struggle for democracy.
The passing of President Mam Jalal, Secretary-General of the PUK and leader of our people's new revolution, as well as the first elected President of a democratic federal Iraq, brought sadness to all parties. Throughout his more than sixty years of struggle, President Mam Jalal was a steadfast defender of the masses, workers, marginalised communities, the families of righteous martyrs, the Peshmerga, the disabled, and political prisoners. His efforts and diplomatic initiatives were dedicated to establishing democracy, peace, and the legitimate rights of our people, including the right to self-determination.
Our great Mam (uncle) was a pioneer in fostering brotherhood among nations, tackling the issues faced by the diverse communities in Iraq, and enhancing the spirit of harmony between the political forces in Kurdistan and Iraq. He played a crucial role in stabilising the region and maintained positive relationships that ensured balance with neighbouring countries and the wider world. With his insightful mind and extensive experience, he navigated numerous challenges and crises effectively.
Under the guidance and presidency of Mam Jalal, freedoms flourished, creating a conducive environment for the civil and democratic struggle of all segments of society, with significant advancements in women’s rights. He firmly believed in the importance of organisational and union efforts, enabling people to secure their demands and uphold their freedoms and rights through civil and professional activism. This included the vital struggles of students, youth, and activists advocating for equality and women's rights.
On the anniversary of this great leader's passing, Kurdistan and Iraq truly need the knowledge, wisdom, and insight of President Mam Jalal. As Kurdistan approaches crucial elections, we aim to follow his approach to reshape the governance landscape and restore the balance of power in favour of democracy, ultimately enhancing the standard of living for the people of Kurdistan.
In Iraq and the surrounding region, tensions, challenging situations, clashes, and significant differences prevail. These issues should be approached with a spirit of peace, coexistence, enlightened initiatives, and the principles of President Mam Jalal.
On this solemn anniversary, we express:
- Our heartfelt respects to the pure soul of President Mam Jalal, the pride of the nation and homeland, and the defender of the country.
- Eternal remembrance for all the martyrs of the Kurdish people, those who fought for democracy and the liberation of Iraq from injustice and dictatorship.
May President Mam Jalal's path endure forever
