The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) mentioned the sector concerning the families of martyrs, Anfal victims, disabled soldiers, political prisoners, and veteran organisations as a primary focus in its programme for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament. The PUK introduced a broad strategy aimed at providing them with improved and more dignified services, as their adverse circumstances stem from discrimination and the wrong course of governance in the Kurdistan Region.
PUK declares, "We Will End It," and PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani affirms, "We deliver our promises."
President Bafel to the families of the martyrs: The PUK stands with you
PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani said in his message addressed to the electorate: "I have a message for the cadres of the PUK, the families of martyrs, the disabled, political prisoners, and our heroic Peshmerga. This is the PUK you asked for: a strong, unified force standing firm against the enemies of Kurdistan. Its voice resonates in Baghdad, and its relations with the international community have reverted to the level they reached during President Mam Jalal's time. The PUK supports and stands with you."
The families of the martyrs should receive optimal material and spiritual support
Mariwan Jawad Bedari, candidate number 59 of the PUK List 129 in Sulaymaniyah constituency, told PUKMEDIA: "The PUK is the sole party that has consistently worked to achieve for the rights of martyrs' families. By correcting the course of governance and via the votes of the relatives of martyrs, disabled soldiers, political prisoners, and Peshmerga, the PUK can secure their rights in the Kurdistan Parliament."
He added: "Unfortunately, the power, which has been in the hands of one force, has not done anything for the families and children of the martyrs, who should be given the most material and spiritual support."
He further stated: “We will strive to raise the salaries of the families of martyrs, political prisoners, and victims of chemical weapons when we enter the parliament... The Peshmerga forces should be established as a national force, with salaries equal to those of Iraq, and the existing inequities between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq must be rectified, particularly given their increased responsibilities."
PUK's limited seats have hampered the delivery of services
Govar Zahir Khurshed, candidate number 36 of the PUK List 129 in Erbil constituency, told PUKMEDIA: “As candidates of the PUK List and former members of the Kurdistan Parliament, we have attempted to enact a law to benefit the families of martyrs, Anfal victims, and Peshmerga troops. Regrettably, our limited parliamentary seats hindered the enactment of this law."
"In this term, we want to recognise the genocide of the Kurdish people globally as it is a global issue and the international community and international organisations must not remain silent on it," she added.
"We want to equalise the salaries of the families of martyrs, Anfal victims, and Peshmerga with Baghdad through the parliament, government, and relevant institutions," continued Khurshed.
The programme for the PUK List 129 for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections states: "The rights of our people and the establishment of the federal system are the results of the sacrifices made by martyrs, veteran Peshmergas, political prisoners, veterans' organisations, Anfal victims, and disabled soldiers. Consequently, they, their families, and their descendants deserve a better quality of life."
The sixth term of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections is scheduled to take place on October 20, 2024. The PUK is contesting with PUK List 129 and 172 candidates under the slogan of "Correcting the Course of Governance and "We Will End It."
