PUK President Highlights Importance of Iranian President's Visit in Fostering Long-Standing Relations

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), highlighted the significance of the Iranian President’s visit to Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Sulaymaniyah, noting that it represents a continuation of the strong and historic ties established by President Mam Jalal.

In a Facebook post, President Bafel Jalal Talabani stated: "Today, we were delighted to welcome Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran."

He added: "The historical visit of Mr. Pezeshkian is of special importance to Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, especially for Sulaymaniyah and the PUK, as it is an extension of strong and historical relations between us and the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which President Mam Jalal established."

President Bafel explained: “In our meeting with Mr. Pezeshkian, we emphasized the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to the security and stability of neighboring countries, particularly our friendly Iranian neighbors. We made it clear that we do not and will not permit the Kurdistan Region to be used as a base for attacks on neighboring countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran. Instead, we aim to expand and develop our longstanding relations while safeguarding our supreme national interests.”

The President of the PUK also stated in his post: “During the meeting, we expressed our gratitude to Iran, its leadership, and its people for their support and assistance to the people of Kurdistan during difficult times. Their significant role in defeating ISIS and their collaboration with the Peshmerga forces were particularly noteworthy. We affirmed that we will never forget their support and friendship and will continue to uphold the policy pursued by President Mam Jalal, which aims to protect our shared supreme interests.”

President Bafel Jalal Talabani also said that President Pezeshkian praised “the pivotal role of President Mam Jalal in building the new Iraq and in formulating a wise policy with neighboring countries, particularly the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He mentioned that the Iranian President expressed gratitude for this longstanding relationship, stating, “We value this historic connection and look forward to enhancing it further. We are committed to supporting your national efforts to achieve security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.”
