Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), received Alina Romanowski, the United States (US) Ambassador to Iraq, at the PUK Political Bureau headquarters in Erbil.
During the meeting, which was attended by Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, the Head of the PUK Relations Bureau, the overall state of affairs in the Kurdistan Region was discussed along with the process for conducting fair elections.
President Bafel provided an overview on the elections and the situation in the Kurdistan Region, during which he expressed: "We are approaching a decisive and pivotal election. It is essential to implement changes in the governance process and reinstate legitimacy to the legal institutions in our region. We hope for the participation of everyone involved to ensure the success of the process and the conduct of fair elections that leads to stability and empowering our region."
Concerning the state of affairs in the Kurdistan Region and the lives of its people, President Bafel stated: "Our consistent stance is in support of dialogue and fostering mutual understanding with all political forces and parties. Our goal is to attain a just life and stable future and our efforts have been for this purpose. We want the government to prioritise the serving its citizens and avoid any form of discrimination in delivering services. Regrettably, in the past, we have witnessed instances where people's lives were entangled with political and party disputes, and the government was manipulated to serve party interests.
The meeting also addressed the matter of the Peshmerga and the unification of the forces, during which President Bafel stated: "Our stance is clear and we reiterate: We aim to establish a powerful national force devoid of any party intervention. We persist in our efforts to achieve this objective and we don't want any hindrances for obstructing this national process."
