The authorities have responded to the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) regarding the verification of candidates' eligibility for the upcoming Kurdistan Parliamentary elections, set for October 20, 2024.
The IHEC's Spokesperson, Jumana al-Ghalai, informed PUKMEDIA that the IHEC has received the responses from the relevant authorities regarding the verification of candidates' eligibility for the Kurdistan Region Parliamentary elections and is currently reviewing them.
The Candidate Affairs Division and the Legal Department are currently reviewing the responses, according to the IHEC spokesperson, to ascertain the statements made about the candidates.
A total of 139 electoral lists are participating in the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections. This includes two alliances, 13 parties, and 124 independent candidates. Among the independent candidates, there are 85 general candidates and 39 candidates for the minorities. A total of 19 Christian candidates are participating in the upcoming elections: there are 7 candidates in Erbil, 4 candidates in Sulaymaniyah, and 8 candidates in Duhok. Furthermore, there are 20 candidates from the Turkmen community: 14 in Erbil and 6 in Sulaymaniyah.
On June 26, 2024, the Kurdistan Region Presidency published its fifth decree to reschedule the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections. Despite issuing four prior decrees, the elections were repeatedly postponed and did not occur on the designated dates.
Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, has designated October 20, 2024, as the official date for conducting the elections for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament.
