The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) released a statement on Monday, August 12, 2024, after a meeting overseen by PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani. The statement emphasised the need to set aside minor conflicts and work together to manage, serve, and rebuild Kirkuk. It stressed the importance of avoiding discrimination between communities and defending the rights of all its residents.

Statement of the PUK Political Bureau:

The PUK Political Bureau convened in Dabashan this afternoon, on August 12, 2024, under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani. During the meeting, congratulations were given on the appointment of a Kurdish governor for Kirkuk, which was a merit achieved through the elections. Furthermore, they underscored their dedication to President Mam Jalal's policy and approach, which prioritises peaceful coexistence among all the native communities in the city.

During the meeting, President Bafel Jalal Talabani emphasised that the victory achieved is not limited to the PUK and Kurds, but is a triumph for all residents of Kirkuk, encompassing all communities. This is because the PUK's approach aligns with the consistent policy of President Mam Jalal, who tirelessly advocated for the rights of all native communities in Kirkuk, including Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, and Christians.

The importance of involving all communities in the local government and administration of Kirkuk was emphasised and we want to assure the Turkmen community and all other communities that they have a rightful role in the administration of Kirkuk. The PUK is committed to defending their rights and will not tolerate any attempts to deny them their rights.

The PUK Political Bureau extended invitations to all parties involved in the Kirkuk provincial council, urging them to set aside minor disagreements and collaborate in the management, service, and reconstruction of Kirkuk, without any discrimination based on community affiliations.

Ultimately, the Political Bureau reached a consensus that while the current governor of Kirkuk is affiliated with the PUK, their duty is to serve all communities impartially, without favouring any political party or national group. The goal is for Kirkuk to not only exemplify peaceful coexistence among different communities, but also to serve as a model of progress and prosperity for Iraq and the surrounding region.
