On Monday, July 29, 2024, Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), received Yann Braem, Consul General of France in the Kurdistan Region, in Dabashan, Sulaymaniyah.

The meeting deliberated on the overall state of affairs in the Kurdistan Region, focussing on the topics of elections and the resolution of disputes between Erbil and Baghdad. The participants emphasised the importance of protecting key interests and ensuring stability in the region.

President Bafel highlighted the measures implemented by the PUK to safeguard the rights of people and ensure their detachment from political disputes. He emphasised that the objective is clear: to prevent the intertwining of people's livelihoods with political conflicts.

"The PUK has diligently undertaken all necessary actions to achieve this goal and will persist in doing so," he said.

President Bafel expressed the need for a change and review of the governance situation in the Kurdistan Region. He emphasised that elections provide the best opportunity for people to exercise their legal and democratic rights and bring about positive changes.

"Any attempt to create obstacles or postpone the elections undermines the will of the people and we hoped that such a mistake won't happen," he said.
