The Kirkuk Provincial Council's inaugural session began with council members, representatives from the Iraqi prime minister's office, and political parties in attendance. Rakan Jibouri, the senior council member, presided over the meeting.

Dr. Ahmed Fatih opened the meeting by reciting verses from the Holy Quran, and Rakan Jibouri delivered several speeches before adjourning the meeting. No date has been set for the completion of the meeting.

Dr. Ahmed Fatih, a member of the PUK faction in the Kirkuk Provincial Council, informed PUKMEDIA that the concerns about the council's formation and the selection of Kirkuk's governor had been successfully addressed, and that the Kirkuk local administration must be established within 30 days.

The Kirkuk Provincial Council election took place on December 18, 2023. This election was part of the larger Iraqi provincial council elections, which included all 15 provinces. Kirkuk was the only province that had yet to form a council or select a candidate for the position of city governor. However, the Kirkuk Provincial Council's inaugural session took place today. In accordance with the law, the parties have thirty days to create a local government in Kirkuk.

PUK faction leader: We will serve Kirkuk as a team

The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Kirkuk Provincial Council has affirmed that the citizens of Kirkuk have chosen the provincial council to represent and serve them, which requires the activation of the council and convening its inaugural session.

Rebwar Taha, Leader of the PUK Faction in Kirkuk Provincial Council said during a press conference: "In our first remarks on the session's agenda, we highlighted several key points. Firstly, we stressed that it is unacceptable for an individual to hold dual positions, one in the council and another in the local administration. Secondly, we emphasised the importance of electing the council president, deputy president, governor, and deputy governors within the designated 30-day timeframe. It is worth mentioning that our comments were made to benefit the people of Kirkuk."

Taha emphasised the commitment to working together as a unified team to serve the residents of Kirkuk without any discrimination. "The positive outcomes of this collective effort will be evident in the near future," he noted.
