On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, welcomed a delegation led by Ana Peyró Llopis, Acting Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations (U.N.) Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da'esh/ISIL (UNITAD), to Baghdad Palace.

President Rashid commended the investigation team for ensuring accountability, bringing justice to those who were victimised, holding Daesh accountable, and bringing the perpetrators to justice to stand trial for their crimes against the Iraqi people.

He emphasised that evidence, additional materials, and analyses should be prepared in the final phase and presented to the appropriate Iraqi authorities upon completion of the team's final investigation phase.

President Rashid also stated that genocide crimes committed under the previous regime's rule, such as Anfal, Halabja, and mass graves, should be investigated.

Acting Special Adviser Peyro Llopis spoke of the investigation efforts to document the crimes, and she underlined the need to work together with Iraqi legal experts to collect, preserve, and store evidence of acts that may constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed against the Iraqi people.

To conclude, Ms. Peyró Llopis reiterated her gratitude to Iraq's authorities for their support.
