On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the President
of the Republic of Iraq, Dr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, met with the Minister of
Migration and Displacement, Mrs. Ivan Faiq Jabro, at Baghdad Palace.
During the discussion, President Rashid
highlighted the importance of creating a suitable environment that ensures the
secure and steady return of the IDPs to their respective regions through the
rehabilitation and reconstruction of their places, as well as the eradication
of any remnants and ideologies left by terrorist groups.
President Rashid expressed that the
presence of displacement camps is no longer suitable, particularly since the
reasons and justifications for their establishment have vanished. He stressed
the need to unite all efforts to ensure the success of the Iraqi Government and
the Kurdistan Regional Government's initiatives in resolving this issue and
permanently shutting down the displacement camps. He emphasised the need for
United Nations organisations to execute their responsibilities and meet their
obligations in a constructive manner that aids in resolving this matter.
Ms. Jabro discussed recent developments
in IDPs and the steps taken to ensure their basic needs for a decent standard
of living. At the same time, she appreciated President Rashid's interest in
this matter and the beneficial recommendations he offered.
