Multiple parties have expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of mayors and district directors in Nineveh Province. A provincial council member stated that the distribution of these posts among the parties is entirely lawful, and those who criticise the decisions do so because they do not serve their interests.

Mohammed Kakayi, the leader of the PUK faction in the Nineveh provincial council, told PUKMEDIA: "The distribution of the positions of mayors and district directors in Nineveh to political parties is carried out in accordance with the parties' electoral rights, and the process is completely lawful."

"The PUK asserts its entitlement to acquire the posts it has obtained, as it is evident to all that Makhmur and these regions were liberated through the sacrifice of the PUK's sons," he added.

Kakayi explained; "Article 115 of the constitution grants the provincial councils the authority to nominate mayors and district directors and as per Article 30 of Provincial Law No. 21 of 2008, the provincial councils have the authority to select governors, mayors, and district directors following the provincial council elections."

PUK obtains three administrative posts in Nineveh

The PUK will acquire three administrative positions in Nineveh Province, which will include the roles of mayor and district administrator.

According to information obtained by PUKMEDIA, Sardar Makhmur is set to become mayor of Makhmur, and Dadu Sheikh Jundi will be appointed director of the Sunune district, while Yasser Sheikh Asaf will take on the role of director in the Wankesh district.

The PUK's success in the Iraqi provincial election in Nineveh has led to the attainment of these positions.

Governor and deputy elections are legitimate, but mayor and district director elections are not

The leader of the PUK faction in the Nineveh provincial council further said: "The council that chose Nineveh's governor and deputy governor is also the same body that chose the directors of each district. So we do not understand why the selection of the governor and deputy governor was lawful, but the appointment of the mayors and directors is not."

Previously, Ahmed Al-Fatlawi, the General Coordinator for Iraqi Provincial Affairs, has urged the Nineveh Provincial Council to postpone any changes in the positions of district mayors and district directors until they receive approval from the State Council.

Meanwhile, the Nineveh Provincial Council released a statement discussing the choices made during its regular session on the appointment of the heads of administrative units. The council affirmed that all these actions were carried out in compliance with constitutional and legal authority.

The Nineveh Provincial Council affirmed in its statement that it will persist in implementing its reform initiatives, as it serves as the true embodiment of the will of the people of Nineveh Province.

The Nineveh Provincial Council also condemned any negative remarks made towards the Council, emphasising its commitment to its lawful authority to take legal action against anyone who has insulted the Council.

The Iraqi provincial council elections, excluding the Kurdistan Region, took place on December 18, 2023. During these elections, the PUK secured two seats in the Nineveh Provincial Council.
