DPM's meeting with UN Delegation
On Tuesday, Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, received a team from the United Nations in Erbil. The delegation was led by Claudio Cordon, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq for Political Affairs and Election Support. The participants engaged in a discussion regarding the current political circumstances in the Kurdistan Region, specifically focusing on the matter of the upcoming Kurdistan Parliamentary election.
The meeting follows the decision to extend the operations of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which is responsible for aiding Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in conducting fair and transparent elections.
Qubad Talabani expressed his pleasure that the UNAMI's mission has been extended and hoped that they will be crucial in ensuring that the election for the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament session is held in a way that will allow the people of the region to have trust in the results.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his concern regarding the delay of the electoral process, emphasising: "There are no longer any valid reasons to further postpone the elections, considering that the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq has completed the necessary preparations for conducting the elections."
