IHEC Extends Registration for Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced an extension of the registration deadline for candidates, coalitions, and political parties who wish to participate in the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
Jumana al-Ghalai, the spokesperson for the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), said that the IHEC decided to prolong the deadline for the registration of political parties, coalitions, and independent candidates to June 27, 2024.
This is the second instance in which the IHEC has prolonged the deadline for the registration of candidates, coalitions, and political parties. The commission had previously granted a 10-day extension to the deadline on June 13, 2024.
So far, four coalitions, 26 parties, 101 independent candidates, party candidates and candidates from Turkmen and Christian communities have registered themselves to compete in the sixth term of Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
The sixth term of Kurdistan parliamentary elections was set to take place on Monday, June 10, 2024, according to the fourth decree issued by the President of the Kurdistan Region. However, the polls have been delayed, and in order to move forward with the elections, the commission is now waiting on a fifth regional decree.
On May 29, 2024, the IHEC formally requested the Kurdistan Region Presidency to schedule the general elections for the Kurdistan Parliament. Additionally, the IHEC recommended September 5, 2024, as the specific date for the elections.
