PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani and British Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hitchen.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met British Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hitchen in Dabashan, Sulaymaniyah.
The meeting discussed the overall situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, emphasising the importance of coordination and collaborative efforts among all political forces and parties to address the challenges impeding regional political progress.
President Bafel clarified the objective of the PUK about the elections and the state of government in the Kurdistan Region, stating: "Our main focus has been on eliminating barriers to holding the elections and ensuring that the process is conducted in a just manner. This was the right step, as we did not want to jeopardise our region's experience or turn our back on the people's desires, and we did not want the democratic process to recede in the region."
During a different part of the meeting, matters concerning Erbil and Baghdad were deliberated upon. President Bafel reiterated the necessity of resolving these issues in accordance with the constitution. He stated: "All our actions in Baghdad were undertaken with the objective of safeguarding the people's rights and the highest interests. We have vehemently opposed any endeavour that undermines the will of our people. And of course, we express our gratitude to all our friends who supported the Kurds' constitutional rights and made efforts to guarantee them."
