Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, along with Iraqi Environment Minister Nizar Mohammed Saeed Amidi and a delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP), conducted a field visit to the Tanjao area in Sulaymaniyah to address the issue of waste and garbage in the province and to improve the quality of water in the Tanjaro river.

The field visit took place on June 1, 2024, and was attended by directorates and relevant parties from Sulaymaniyah province. During a meeting held following the trip, the participants discussed the adverse effects of waste and garbage accumulation, as well as water pollution in Tanjaro and Darbandikhan, on the environment and public health. They also explored potential solutions to address these issues.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged the relevant parties of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and WFP to collaborate on developing a scientific plan for a prompt and sustainable solution. He also expressed KRG's readiness to cooperate in resolving the issue.

Iraqi Minister of Environment Amidi stated that his ministry is prepared to collaborate with the KRG and WFP to oversee the resolution of the issue.

Following the conclusion of the meeting, it was determined that a collaborative committee of the relevant parties from Sulaymaniyah province, the Iraqi Ministry of Environment, WFP, and other international organisations would be established to devise and then execute a comprehensive strategy.
