Jumana al-Ghalai, the spokesperson for the IHEC.
The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) confirmed that it is actively preparing for the 6th term of Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections. It also announced that it will conduct a draw to assign numbers to the candidates and lists, with the presence of press and media channels.
"The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) is currently making arrangements for the Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections. After the candidates were submitted, the IHEC will conduct a draw to assign numbers to the lists and coalitions," stated Jumana al-Ghalai, the spokesperson for the IHEC, to PUKMEDIA.
"The IHEC will conduct a draw on April 7, 2024 in Baghdad in the presence of the media. This draw will assign numbers to lists, coalitions, and independent candidates, beginning with number 101," she stated.
Based on information acquired by PUKMEDIA, the draw process will involve the use of two devices. One device will be specifically for the names of lists, coalitions, and independent candidates, while the second device will contain numbers starting from 101. Each time a name from the lists or coalitions is selected, a corresponding number will also be chosen for that particular list, coalition, or independent candidate.
A total of 20 political parties, 2 coalitions, and 62 independent candidates were registered to take part in the forthcoming parliamentary elections throughout all four constituencies of Kurdistan. However, the current count of registered names of candidates indicate that only two coalitions, 10 parties, together with 54 independent candidates are taking part in the elections.
The Kurdistan Region has a total of 3,789,360 voters, out of whom over 2,900,000 have successfully registered in the biometric registration and are expected to take part in the elections in all four constituencies of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja.
