The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) affirms that the elections should be held on time and without delay.
PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani chaired a meeting of the PUK's Political Bureau on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Following the meeting, the Political Bureau of the PUK issued a statement affirming that the PUK has made comprehensive arrangements for the forthcoming Kurdistan Parliamentary elections, which are set to take place on June 10, 2024.
The Political Bureau's statement read:
The PUK President, Bafel Jalal Talabani, chaired a meeting of the PUK Political Bureau to discuss the PUK's ongoing preparations in all of the constituencies of Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Duhok, and Halabja for the upcoming parliamentary elections that are scheduled for June 10, 2024.
The meeting underscored the urgent need to prioritise the distribution of salaries for the livelihood and welfare of the Kurdish people.
The Political Bureau convened today (March 19, 2024) in Dabashan and reaffirmed the PUK's unwavering stance on the timely and uninterrupted conduct of elections. Emphasising the elections as the sole legitimate means to rejuvenate the democratic process and establish the legitimacy of governance in our country, the meeting reiterated the party's persistent preparedness for this electoral event.
Regardless of the reason, it was discussed in the meeting that holding the elections later than expected would undermine democracy and cast doubt on the legitimacy of the institutions in the Kurdistan Region. In order to address the outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, particularly those pertaining to the budget and salaries, it also highlights how crucial it is to protect our institution from potential threats and risks. This can only be done by returning to the people's will and their ability to elect their representatives through a fair parliamentary election that takes into account the opinions of all factions and parties involved.
The Political Bureau also stated that the establishment of an autonomous Kurdistan was made possible by the Kurdish people's sacrifices. It emphasised the importance of safeguarding this achievement through a democratic transfer of power, which will also increase the international community's regard and trust in the Kurdistan Region's authorities, as the global community only supports a free, democratic, and legal experience.
