PUK Elections

Saadi Ahmed Pire, the spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), states: "The PUK will present its list of candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections. We do not consider any list as a danger to the PUK, and the communities can be a part of the PUK list." Additionally, he advocated for the election campaign to be devoid of offensive statements.

The Political Bureau of the PUK convened today to determine the candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

During a press conference, Pire stated: "Today is the anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack, and we extend our condolences to the victims' families and wish those affected by chemical weapons a speedy recovery." He added, "It is crucial to establish Halabja as a province and provide support from the Iraqi government, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and the international community. Additionally, it is necessary to establish a research-based health centre in the province to study water, soil, agricultural goods, and infants in the province."

"The PUK will timely provide the Independent High Electoral Commission with its list of candidates for the parliamentary elections. Some candidates have already been selected, and we will announce the full list of candidates in the coming days," he added.

Pire also stated: "We advocate for the election campaign to be devoid of hateful language, as such language has not led to the victory of any political party. Furthermore, we do not perceive any electoral list as a threat to the PUK."

"A portion of the meeting was allocated to deliberating on the election procedure and finalising the candidates' names. The forthcoming meeting of the Political Bureau will ascertain the names of all candidates for the elections," he stated.

In response to journalists' questions about the Kirkuk provincial council, Pire stated: "The Political Bureaus of the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party agreed to establish the Kirkuk provincial council in collaboration with other communities and political parties. Further votes are required to determine the appointment of the Kirkuk governor, and we prefer a governor who can effectively represent all political parties involved. Both Turkmen and Christians can be on the list of PUK."

"The PUK is not threatened by any list under the election law. Following the Fifth Congress, the PUK won numerous victories," he added.

In relation to the supervision of the PUK list, he stated that President Bafel will personally visit and oversee all constituencies.

Pire continued, "The PUK is a revolutionary force, and its people are its primary supporters. Despite false claims, the PUK won a significant number of seats in Iraq's provincial council elections, particularly in disputed areas and Kirkuk."
