The press conference.
The Leadership Council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) held a meeting in Sulaymaniyah on Monday, January 22, 2024. Following the conclusion of the meeting, the spokesman for the PUK made the following statement: "As the PUK, we are fully prepared for the next elections and hope their timely occurrence," he added.
At the press conference held after the meeting, Saadi Ahmed Pire, the spokesperson for the PUK, stated: "The significance of the Iraqi provincial council elections for the PUK was emphasized, as it demonstrated the success of their congress and their effective preparation for the elections, as evidenced by the results." We will engage in negotiations with the political parties and other communities to establish a new governing body in Kirkuk and the disputed regions. It is evident that the PUK, being the primary power, has the right to assume the governor's position in Kirkuk. However, for other administrative positions, it is important that all parties are involved. Regrettably, it is observed that a more substantial outcome could be achieved if the Kurdish parties in the disputed regions participated in the elections as a unified coalition."
Regarding the Kurdistan Parliamentary elections, Pire stated: "The PUK, as a significant power in Kurdistan, is always ready and has made necessary arrangements for the next elections. We hope to hold elections promptly, ensuring a transparent, equitable, and well-organized process devoid of fraudulent activities and unwarranted disputes, as it aligns with democratic principles."
