The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has consistently seen unity as the sole recourse for addressing all significant matters about people's lives. To promote unity and establish a unified Kurdish list in the disputed areas, a high-level delegation was formed at the recommendation of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani. The purpose of this delegation was to visit the parties involved in the Iraqi provincial council elections campaign and request their cooperation to enhance service, peace, and unity in these areas. Nevertheless, the sole party that heeded the PUK's appeal and established a coalition with it was the Kurdistan Communist Party (KCP).
Sheikh Jaafar: Our victory will make our task more difficult
Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, supervisor of the PUK's Supreme Interests Council, stated during the ceremony where several housing units were distributed to the families of martyrs who fought against ISIS: "Despite the PUK's significant triumph in the disputed regions, particularly in Kirkuk, during the provincial council elections in Iraq, we desired the participation of all Kurdish parties in a unified coalition because our dispersion resulted in a considerable loss of Kurdish votes."
"The PUK will abstain from engaging in conflict with any political group, and our representatives in the disputed areas serve as representatives for all political parties and communities," he stated. "The victories we have achieved in the disputed regions and Kirkuk will pose greater challenges for us, necessitating a higher level of dedication and service than before."
In addition, he said: "The PUK called on all Kurdish parties to band together to garner support through a Kurdish coalition before the Iraqi provincial council elections. Unfortunately, some parties disregarded this advice, which led to a considerable decline in Kurdish votes. However, there is still time to show solidarity with one another inside the contested province councils and prove that we are the true representatives of our people and other communities."
Pire: The parties should work to serve the Kurds
"The unification of Kurdish parties in the provincial councils of the disputed regions will lead to greater success, particularly in Kirkuk province, enabling us to designate a Kurdish governor for the region," said PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire.
"The PUK's relations with Kurdish and Arab parties, particularly in Kirkuk and Mosul, aim to secure advantageous outcomes and foster collaboration for the betterment of the city and the Kurdish people, rather than pursuing our political agenda," he added.
The PUK does not impose any strict standards or preferences on any political party or community concerning the formation of the new government in the province of Kirkuk. Instead, it is open to unity in this regard. Serving the Kurds and the disputed areas is the only goal. Following the announcement of the final election results, the party plans to continue negotiating with the other parties.
