General Voting for Iraqi Provincial Councils Election Begins

Citizens Participate in the Iraqi Provincial Councils Election
The general election for the Iraqi provincial councils will take place in 15 provinces of Iraq, starting at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2023, and concluding at 6:00 p.m.
More than 15 million people are eligible to vote
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) reports that all necessary preparations have been made for the participation of 15 million, 108 thousand, and 135 voters in the provincial council elections.
More than four million people will cast ballots in the disputed areas
Four million, 378 thousand, and 282 voters cast ballots in the disputed areas, according to the IHEC and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) Election Bureau. This represents nearly one-third of the total number of voters in the Iraqi provincial council election, which is expected to exceed 15 million.
8,000 centers and 39,000 polling stations have been set up for voters
16,778, or 16 million voters, will cast ballots in the provincial council election; 38,400 polling places and 7,766 centres are ready for them.
Special elections were held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, for the Iraqi provincial council elections. 48,260 transferees and 1,002,393 special voters in total were eligible to cast ballots in the special election, according to the IHEC.
According to the IHEC, 134 lists, comprising 29 parties, 66 independent candidates, and 39 coalitions, are running in the Iraqi provincial council election. After nearly 40 days of campaigning for their candidates and electoral lists, IHEC officially ended the campaign on Friday.
