Recent tensions in Kirkuk over a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) headquarters and political disputes dominated a meeting of the State of Law Coalition convened on Saturday, September 9, 2023, in the Council of Ministers.
The meeting was attended by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani, Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives Mohammed Al-Halbousi, and Representatives of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the KDP.
The coalition decided to create a committee to reveal the truth, implement administrative changes in Kirkuk, and preserve harmony among all communities.
The meeting's primary topics were the situation in Kirkuk, the martyrdom and injury of Kirkuk youth, and the arrests that occurred on September 2, 2023, as well as the issue of Kurdistan Region salaries and financial entitlements, which were of interest to PUK representatives.
In a statement issued following the summit, the State of Law Coalition condemned the tensions in Kirkuk, regardless of why they happened.
In addition to calling for a commitment to a national dialogue that will help stabilize peace and security in Kirkuk, the statement emphasized the importance of conducting local elections on time, particularly in Kirkuk.
The coalition also stated that it supports the decision of the Council of Representatives to establish a parliamentary committee to investigate the events in Kirkuk and has emphasized the need to make the investigation's findings public and punish those found to be responsible.
