President Bafel: PUK Supports Unifying Peshmerga

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with General Matthew McFarlane, Commander-in-Chief of the Global Coalition in Iraq and Syria, in Baghdad, to mark the end of General McFarlane's mission.

President Bafel praised General McFarlane's role in assisting and coordinating military operations against the Islamic State (ISIS) as well as military cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad during his tenure in office.

The meeting also addressed the security situation and Peshmerga reforms. President Bafel stated: "The PUK supports the unification of the Peshmerga forces and wants to build a strong national force to protect Kurdistan, but fairly and without regard to private interests." 

"Cooperation and joint work between the security forces is a key factor in maintaining stability in the region, and we are working towards that," he said.
