PUK and KCP's press conference.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan
Communist Party (KCP) have joined hands and formed an alliance to run for the
next Iraqi Provincial Council Elections on one list in Kirkuk.
In a press conference on Saturday, August 5, 2023, the two
sides announced their alliance, demonstrated their readiness, and urged other
Kurdish parties to join them.
To have the most Kurdish representatives in Kirkuk, the
PUK's Organization Center 2 head Rawand Mala Mahmoud told PUKMEDIA that they
have formed an alliance with the KCP and hope to attract more parties to join
them.
The PUK has recently begun a series of meetings with the
Kurdish parties in Kirkuk with the aim of forming a united Kurdistani list to
run for the next Iraqi Provincial Council Elections on one list in Kirkuk.
The former Iraqi Ba'ath regime made significant efforts to
Arabize all residents of Diyala, Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Salah ad-Din. This is one
of the factors that led to the ongoing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad over
these areas. However, despite the fact that Article 140 of the Iraqi
Constitution was written in part to address the problem, the law has not yet
been put into effect. The call made by the PUK is an effort to increase the
number of Kurds who vote in these areas so that the Kurds can have more
influence and benefit the communities that live in these areas.
