KRG meeting with foreign diplomats.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, presided over a joint meeting on environmental protection between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and more than 16 consuls and diplomatic envoys in the Kurdistan Region and discussed several projects to work together to protect the environment in Kurdistan.
Deputy PM Qubad Talabani spoke about the current environmental state in Kurdistan, as well as the dangers and consequences of climate change in Kurdistan, during the meeting held on Monday, June 26, 2023, in Erbil and attended by the Minister of Electricity, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Chairman of the Environment Board, and Deputy Head of Foreign Relations Office.
Regarding the issue, Qubad Talabani said: "It is not too late for the government, civil society, and friendly countries to prepare a strategic and scientific plan to address climate change and protect the Kurdistan environment and implement it in cooperation with one another, because the environment issue is an important issue, and without the thorough cooperation of the government, civil society, and the international community, it is not easy to fight against dangerous environmental changes."
In another section of his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister mentioned the issues with Kurdistan's water and land resources: "Unfortunately, our fertile soil is under threat. We must take measures to safeguard and clean up the soil and water resources, even though we want to enhance the agricultural sector for increased food security and economic growth."
Qubad Talabani urged friendly nations to send specialists and advisors to Kurdistan, especially in the fields of water and soil conservation and sanitation.
Other topics covered at the meeting were ways to improve Kurdistan's green space, public awareness campaigns, and the function of civil society organizations in environmental conservation. Qubad Talabani urged the consulates to focus more on collaborating with environmental organizations in this area.
Several alternative projects were given to the consulates during another portion of the meeting to help the KRG and civil society in their respective countries with the issue of environmental protection.
Qubad Talabani held a meeting on Sunday, June 25, 2023, with academics and environmental experts in Kurdistan to discuss environmental issues. Experts and relevant parties from the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and Kurdistan will hold subsequent sessions in the coming days.
