The Kurdistan Genocide Writers Union (KGWU) has demanded the release of Ali Mahmoud, a well-known Kurdish and international figure.
Ali Mahmoud, also known as Ali Siyasi, a member of the KGWU Supreme Council, was detained by a security force that stormed his home on April 25, 2023. His arrest was later broadcast on TV, which led to a significant outcry.
In a statement sent to PUKMEDIA and addressed to the Kurdish Public Opinion and relevant parties, KGWU said: "We request that the investigating judge release him on bail because his file is distinct from the other person's file; his file should be kept separate."
The statement stated: "Ali Mahmoud is a member of the Supreme Council of the KGWU and a human rights activist, not only known in Kurdistan but also abroad, and holds Dutch citizenship."
"We condemn how he was arrested while also calling for his release," the statement said. "We also object to how he was photographed and portrayed on television. While government agencies have the right to sue over this incident, any such action must be proportionate and strictly legal."
On the Anfal anniversary, Ali Mahmoud said, "The son of one of those who carried out the Anfal of my relatives is now the mayor of Erbil."
