The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a message on the 35th anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack.
The complete text is as follows:
The anniversary of the chemical attack by the fallen Ba'ath regime on Halabja and its surroundings is a historical wound that cannot be healed.
The human pain caused by this disaster gave Halabja the identity of our oppressed nation and, at the same time, stirred humanity's conscience in response to the suffering experienced by our people.
The PUK understands the miseries and suffering of the people of Halabja, and it will continue to fight for them without hesitation, both directly and through the Kurdistan Regional Government, in order to help the province of Halabja heal its wounds and advance this comprehensive case for prosperity and service. The PUK believes that what has been accomplished for the Sharazwr's capital of suffering and grief, is still insufficient because the residents of Halabja deserve even more.
This year, as the anniversary drew closer, the Iraqi Council of Ministers approved the bill to establish Halabja as a province. We hope that at the earliest opportunity, the Iraqi parliament will pass a federal law designating Halabja as the nineteenth province, hopefully, this action will have the moral and administrative impact to expand opportunities for service, prosperity, and compensation.
We urge the Kurdistan Regional Government as well as the Federal Government to offer the city the additional services and prosperity it deserves.
We honor the departed souls of the Halabja martyrs as well as all other Kurdish martyrs and the people of Kurdistan, and we reaffirm our devotion to the families of the deceased and injured.
