The United States (U.S.) and the United Kingdom (UK) welcomed the newly started round of negotiations between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
"The UK welcomes talks between the KDP and PUK today. A crucial first step to finding common ground for the benefit of the KRI. We look forward to progress being made on key issues at the follow-up meeting," the UK Consulate General in Erbil tweeted.
"We welcome our partners in the KRG taking steps to repair internal relations for the benefit of their people. Working together, they can build a more resilient Iraqi Kurdistan Region. A house united shall always prosper," the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil tweeted.
The PUK and KDP Political Bureaus met in Sulaymaniyah for the first time following the recent tensions on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
The two sides published a joint statement following the meeting stating that they discussed the general situation, local and regional dynamics, as well as the perspectives and remarks of both parties on a variety of matters pertaining to the prior agreement between the two parties.
The parties ultimately agreed to hold another meeting in the near future.
