Car accident kills 12 in central Iraq

Iraq 01:11 PM - 2022-07-29

Twelve people were killed and five others injured in a traffic accident in the city of Hillah in central Iraq.

The incident happened when a passenger-carrying minibus hit a tipper truck on Hillah's main road.

PUKmedia correspondent said that 12 people died and five others were injured in the incident.

The victims were residents of the Baladi district of Saladin Governorate and were on their way to visit the shrine of Imam Hussain.

Traffic accidents are a common occurrence in Iraq as last year, 4,863 deaths were recorded from traffic crashes. In 2020, traffic accidents killed 3,891 people across Iraq.

Authorities often blame negligence by passengers to follow traffic instructions like fastening seatbelts, as well as poorly constructed roads full of potholes and plunged into darkness, making it hard to see when driving during the night.

A car accident between Baghdad and Babil killed 14 people in April 2021.
