United Nations Mission in Iraq - UNAMI affirmed on Wednesday, that peaceful protesting is essential to democracy.
"Peaceful protesting is essential for democracy," said the mission in a statement received by PUKmedia, pointing to "the importance of respecting state institutions and preserving public and private property.”
The statement highlighted “the need for peaceful protests to continue and to comply with the law."
The protests began, this Wednesday’s evening to withdraw from the parliament building and the Green Zone, which they entered earlier.
Kadhimi's media office said in a statement, that "the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces called the demonstrators to abide by being peaceful to preserve public and private property, and by the instructions of the security forces responsible for protecting them in accordance with the regulations and laws, and to immediately withdraw from the Green Zone."
A short while ago, the leader of the Sadrist movement Sayyed Muqtada al-Sadr, called on the demonstrators to return home.
The right to peaceful protest is essential to democracy. However, it goes hand in hand with respect for state institutions and the safeguarding of public and private property. It is imperative that protests remain peaceful and in compliance with the law.
