Protestors stormed the Iraqi parliament's building inside the protected Green Zone in central Baghdad on Wednesday.
Demonstrations erupted earlier in the day in the capital Baghdad against the nomination of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani by Iraq's Coordination Framework for the post of prime minister.
Security forces fired tear gas in an attempt to drive away the demonstrators who stormed the Green Zone in central Baghdad.
For his part, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, called on the demonstrators to immediately withdraw from the Green Zone.
Kadhimi's media office said in a statement, that "the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces called the demonstrators to abide by being peaceful to preserve public and private property, and by the instructions of the security forces responsible for protecting them in accordance with the regulations and laws, and to immediately withdraw from the Green Zone."
Kadhimi also said, according to the statement, that "the security forces will be committed to protecting state institutions and international missions, and preventing any disruption to security and order."
