Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq shows support for PUK candidate

Iraq 12:25 PM - 2022-07-26

The Secretary-General of Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq (League of the Righteous), Qais al-Khazali, called on the Kurdish parties to agree and resolve their candidate for the post of President of the Republic.

Khazali said in a tweet, "We are supportive for the Kurdish brothers to have one candidate for the post of President of the Republic, and we gave them the opportunity to agree on one candidate."

"We hope that the Kurdish parties will reach an agreement on one candidate, and if this agreement does not happen, we will vote for the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) for the presidency," he emphasized.

He declared, "PUK is an important ally for us and has supported us from the beginning."

Previously, Harem Kamal Agha, head of the PUK bloc, said in an exclusive statement to PUKmedia that negotiations are ongoing between the PUK and the KDP regarding resolving the Presidential post.

He indicated that after Eid al-Adha, either both parties agree on one candidate or re-experiment the 2018 event, with each party going to the parliament hall with their candidate.

Both the PUK and the KDP are major parties in the Iraqi political arena. According to a previous agreement between both parties, the PUK gets the Iraqi Presidency post while the KDP gets the Kurdistan Region's presidential post.

The Iraqi presidential position has been held by the PUK since 2005. However, the situation changed in 2018 when both parties nominated separate candidates for the same position. The PUK’s Barham Salih won the majority of parliament votes.
