Foreign Ministry: UN Security Council is supportive in its condemnation statement on Iraq's sovereignty

On Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the UN Security Council's statement supports Iraq's position while noting that it is the first of its kind.

According to Iraqi News Agency (INA), the ministry's spokesman, Ahmed al-Sahaf, stated, "The statement of the Security Council condemning the attack on Iraq's sovereignty is the first of its kind in the context of the series of Turkish violations of Iraq's sovereignty and security."

"Its content supports Iraq's position and puts the procedures for considering the attack on national sovereignty in a new context," he added.

Security Council's press statement on the attack in Duhok Governorate

The following Security Council press statement was issued by Council President Ronaldo Costa Filho (Brazil) on Monday:

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack in Duhok province of Iraq on 20 July 2022. The attack resulted in at least nine civilian deaths, including children.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Iraq and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured, and expressed their support for the Iraqi authorities in their investigations.

The members of the Security Council urged all Member States to cooperate actively with the Government of Iraq and all other relevant authorities in support of these investigations.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for the independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, democratic process and prosperity of Iraq.
