Qubad Talabani condemns Al-Kadhimi's assassination attempt

Iraq 12:03 PM - 2021-11-07

Qubad Talabani, KRG's Deputy Prime Minister, condemned the criminal act that targeted the house of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.

Talabani stated, "I strongly condemn the criminal act that targeted the house of the Iraqi Prime Minister in Baghdad, while we affirm our rejection of this criminal act that contradicts moral and humanitarian principles and values."

"We call on all parties to unite, avoid dissonance and stand united in front of these criminal acts and give priority to the interest of Iraq and its people in order to establish security and stability throughout the country," he added.

Qubad Talabani continued, " While the people are waiting for the political parties to reach an agreement to form a government that provides services and consolidates security, we call for consensus and consider the interest of the Iraqi people of all components."

Iraq's state media announced earlier on Sunday that the Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, was subjected to a failed assassination attempt.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister called for "calm and restraint from everyone, for the sake of Iraq".

Al-Kadhimi, a former intelligence chief, was sworn into office in May last year.

In recent weeks, supporters of pro-Iran political groups have staged demonstrations near the Green Zone against the results of October's general elections, which they said had voting irregularities.

Over 100 people were injured during violent clashes with security forces this week.
