Mar Paulos III Nona officially assumed leadership of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and worldwide on Friday, 29 May 2026, during a ceremony attended by religious and official figures.

The enthronement ceremony for the new Patriarch of the Chaldean Church took place at St. Joseph's Church in Baghdad amid a celebratory atmosphere and special prayers. The position of Patriarch of the Chaldean Church is regarded as one of the most prominent Christian religious offices in Iraq.

During his address at the ceremony, Patriarch Mar Paulos III Nona stressed that the presence of the Chaldean Church in Iraq is deeply rooted in the country’s ancient history.

“Unity within the Church is paramount. The Chaldean Church is one, embracing all, and its goals are unified,” he said.

He added: “The Chaldean Church’s presence in Iraq is fundamental to its ancient history.”

The Patriarch also emphasised the importance of perseverance and openness despite ongoing challenges.

“The Church requires a great deal of work in order to fulfil its message,” he stated, adding that “fear is a natural response, but the problem lies not in fear itself, rather in surrendering to it. A fearful person tends to withdraw and seek security, even if it is illusory.”

He continued: “My message begins with confidence, despite the challenges, and with openness to everyone, despite the difficult circumstances.”
