US Central Command (CENTCOM) has said Iran launched a ballistic missile towards Kuwait in the early hours of Thursday, in an escalation of regional tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

According to CENTCOM, Kuwaiti air defences successfully intercepted the missile before it could reach its target. The command said the launch took place at 10:17pm Eastern Time (5:17am local time), describing it as a “blatant violation of the ceasefire” by Iran.

The US military also reported that Iranian forces deployed five one-way attack drones operating around the Strait of Hormuz, which it said posed a “clear threat” to shipping and regional stability. CENTCOM stated that all five drones were intercepted by US forces.

In addition, the statement said a sixth drone launch originating from a ground control site in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran, was also disrupted.

CENTCOM added that US forces would remain “vigilant and measured” as they continue operations to protect personnel and interests in the region, amid rising concerns over further escalation in the Gulf.
