A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Honaunau-Napoopoo on the Big Island of Hawaii late on Friday, prompting monitoring of the nearby Kilauea volcano by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Kilauea volcano, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has been erupting intermittently since 23 December 2024.

In an update earlier on Friday, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) said the next eruption was expected sometime between 24 and 27 May, based on forecast models.

The earthquake was widely felt across Hawaii, including the islands of Maui and Oahu. The USGS reported that the quake occurred at a depth of around 23 km (14 miles).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami was expected, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
