At least one person has been killed and several others injured following a car explosion in Damascus on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, according to the Syrian Civil Defence.
A security source suggested the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted inside a vehicle near the Armaments Administration building in the Bab Sharqi district of the capital.
A Civil Defence source told AFP that “at least one person was killed in the explosion, and 12 others were injured,” while initial security assessments indicated the device had been placed inside the car.
An AFP correspondent reported hearing a loud explosion before seeing a vehicle engulfed in flames in the middle of the street close to the Armaments Administration building, which is part of the Ministry of Defence and lies near the Old City of Damascus.
Witnesses said emergency teams, including ambulances and Civil Defence units, quickly arrived at the scene. The incident was followed by heightened security measures, with several roads in the surrounding area closed and checkpoints reinforced. Authorities placed the Bab Sharqi, Douilaa, and Airport Road districts under increased security restrictions.
