The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have reported separate drone-related incidents amid escalating regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The UAE said a drone strike triggered a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, describing the incident as a “dangerous escalation”.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, three drones entered the country from the “western border direction”. Two were intercepted by air defence systems, while a third struck an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah facility, causing a fire.
Authorities said the blaze was quickly brought under control and no injuries or radiation leaks were reported. Officials are continuing investigations into the source of the drones.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia announced that its air defences had intercepted three drones that entered the kingdom’s airspace from the direction of Iraq. Saudi officials did not report any casualties or damage.
The incidents come as regional tensions remain high amid a prolonged deadlock surrounding Iran and wider Middle East security disputes. Gulf states have repeatedly warned that continued instability risks drawing neighbouring countries further into the conflict.
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, is the Arab world’s first operational nuclear energy facility and is considered a strategically important site for the UAE.
Neither the UAE nor Saudi Arabia directly blamed Iran for the drone incidents, although both countries have previously accused Iran-backed groups of carrying out similar attacks in the region.
