USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78).
The USS Gerald R. Ford, America’s largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, has returned to port in Virginia after an 11-month deployment at sea.
The extended mission, which lasted more than 300 days, is believed to be the longest operational deployment of a U.S. aircraft carrier since the end of the Vietnam War. During its time at sea, the ship supported major U.S. military operations in multiple regions, including the war with Iran and the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The deployment also involved periods of operational strain, including a fire aboard the ship while it was at sea and ongoing technical issues affecting onboard systems.
“What the Ford Carrier Strike Group did, and these destroyers did, was exceptional, phenomenal,” said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who joined families in welcoming the sailors home.
Adm. Daryl Caudle recognised the difficulties of the longer-than-expected deployment, stressing that he doesn’t “want that to be a precedent.”
Aircraft carriers are designed to deploy for up to 7 months, but the Ford was at sea for 11.
While Caudle acknowledged that a “once in a lifetime … confluence of events” led to the long deployment, including U.S.’ war with Iran, he added, “We really want to deploy our ships for the length of time they’re designed to.”
It was a challenging deployment at times. In March, a fire broke out in the Ford’s laundry compartment and took the crew around 30 hours to extinguish, secure, and prevent from reigniting. Approximately 600 sailors temporarily lost access to their berthing spaces due to the damage, although no serious injuries were reported. The incident also disrupted onboard laundry services for a period, adding to the operational strain on the crew.
Caudle said Saturday that the fire is “still under investigation.”
The fire occurred several months into the ship’s deployment, following a series of earlier technical issues with its onboard sanitation system. These included repeated, intermittent partial outages that caused significant inconvenience for the crew and ultimately necessitated a port visit for repairs.
Current and former military officials have described the $13 billion vessel as having played an essential role in recent U.S. military operations involving Iran and Venezuela. During the Venezuela mission, the carrier launched aircraft that supported the operation leading to the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro. In the Middle East, it served as a forward operating platform, launching successive waves of fighter jet sorties during the campaign against Iran.
After departing Virginia in June last year, the Ford transited across the Atlantic, initially operating in the Mediterranean and subsequently heading north to Norway as part of its scheduled deployment. It was later redeployed to the Caribbean in January to support the Venezuela operation, before being rapidly redirected to the Middle East amid escalating tensions. The carrier then remained engaged in operations against Iran until beginning its return journey, crossing from the Mediterranean into the Atlantic earlier this month.
